Give a helping hand to Issue 4!

A message from Phyllis Drees, from Talbert House:

I am writing you again to ask your help in supporting the Family Services and Treatment Levy, Issue 4.  This levy funds services provided by Hamilton County and several agencies including Coalition for Drug Free Greater Cincinnati, Cincinnati Union Bethel, First Step Home, CCHB, Prospect House and Talbert House.   These services are critical to the continuum of care in Hamilton County related to drug and alcohol prevention, treatment and jail alternatives.  We are just two weeks out from the election and we need to make sure everyone knows how important passage of Issue 4 is.

If you'd like a yard sign, or to learn more, visit their website at http://familyservicesandtreatment.com/

Read below for a message from Tim Vogt, Director of Starfire Council.

So, if you're like me, all this recent Michael Jackson coverage has made you think about what an awesome dancer you are.  I know how frustrating it is when you could be out tearing up dance floors, but there's just no place big enough to contain your electrifying moves…

Guess what?
I’ve got great news!

You and your friends, family and co-workers are now formally invited to what I can only imagine will be one of the most embarrassing hilarious wonderful events of the year:

This Sunday, September 20, Starfire and Stepping Stones are teaming up to host "Dancing Through the Decades"...a Dance-A-Thon to support the Levy for MRDD Services.

We've already got nearly 120 Starfire members, volunteers and staff coming, but we need more dancers!

Like I said, it's a Dance-A-Thon, so the DJ's will be playing music from the 30's to today.  Whether you grew up on Three Dog Night or Snoop Doggy Dogg, we've got you covered:)

1:00-3:00 - Bop and Swing to songs from the 30's 40's and 50's
3:00-5:00 - Groove to the 60's, 70's and 80's
5:00-7:00 - Rave to the 90's and 00's

Stop by for the era that puts the boogie in your booty and celebrate with us!

The party will be at the Hartwell Center (59 Caldwell Drive)
$10/person or $30/family (proceeds go to support the MRDD Services Levy)
See the flyer for more details or drop me an email at Tim@starfirecouncil.org

Make sure to forward along to everyone you know and we’ll see you Sunday!

Tim

Save the Date!

August 18, 2009

The Hamilton County Commissioners officially voted to place the MR/DD Services Levy on the ballot in November. The levy to be voted upon will be a renewal of the current amount of 3.62 mills plus an increase of .51 mills, which total 4.13 mills. Currently, the owner of a $100,000 home in Hamilton County pays $89.32 a year for this levy. With a small increase, the owner of a $100,000 home will pay an additional $15.12 a year.

Please see this letter from Cheryl Phipps, Superintedent, going in further detail about the budget for the coming years.

The Hamilton County Commissioners will be deciding the amount of our next 5 year levy the week of August 10, and we need your help in convincing them that the amount should be $416.9 million.  That will give us a slight increase over what we’re spending now and will help us avoid long waiting lists for services.

Preliminary findings of tax levy report positive – final expected April 17

The audit firm TATC is expected to submit a final report about The Hamilton County Board of MR/DD to the Hamilton County Commissioner-appointed Tax Levy Review Committee on Friday, April 17.  This report is the first step in the levy review process required by the Hamilton County Commissioners in anticipation of the agency’s five-year levy request for the fall 2009 election.

Mark Olson, TATC senior manager, presented highlights of the report to the MR/DD board April 14.  Initial observations from TATC are that the agency is impressive with impressive staff, board members are appropriately involved, and managers and staff coordinate services and operations effectively.

We have been notified by the County Commissioners Office that our audit firm for the tax levy process has been selected. The firm is TATC, and they will begin their review of our agency on February 5, 2009. Their report and recommendations for our levy are due to the Tax Levy Review Committee by the end of April.

Ken Murray, one of the principles in TATC, was formerly with the firm that completed our 2004 levy review, and he is familiar with our great services. We look forward to working with Ken again, and know we will receive a thorough and fair review.
